2. What is NPTEL?
NPTEL is an initiative by the IITs (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and IISc along with full financial support by MHRD.
The main objective of the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is to enhance the quality of engineering and science education in the country by developing contents for undergraduate and postgraduate curricula using video and web based courses. These courses cover the syllabi prescribed by universities and approved by AICTE.
The basic objective of science and engineering education in India is to devise and guide reforms that will transform India into a strong and vibrant knowledge economy. In this context, the focus areas for NPTEL project have been i) higher education, ii) professional education, iii) distance education and iv) continuous and open learning, roughly in that order of preference.
Manpower requirement for trained engineers, scientists and technologists is far more than the number of qualified graduates that Indian educational institutions can provide currently. Among these, the number of institutions having fully qualified and trained teachers in all disciplines being taught forms a small fraction. A significant fraction of teacher population is young and inexperienced. Therefore, it is important for institutions like IITs, IISc, NITs and other leading Universities in India to disseminate teaching/learning content of high quality through all available media..
India needs many more teachers for effective implementation of higher education in science, technology and professional courses. Therefore, methods for training young and inexperienced teachers to enable them carry out their academic responsibilities effectively are a must. NPTEL contents can be used as core curriculum content for training purposes.
A large number of students who are unable to attend scholarly institutions will have access to quality content through NPTEL. All those who are gainfully employed in industries and all other walks of life and require continuous training and updating their knowledge can also benefit from well-developed and peer-reviewed course contents by the IITs, IISc and other partner institutions in NPTEL.

NPTEL project has more than 770 courses in which about 398 courses have been developed in video format, with each course comprising of approximately 40 or more one-hour lectures. The remaining are web courses in engineering/science and humanities and have been developed in text format with animations and other interaction. The project will complete this task for a total of 1619 courses by next year. NPTEL video repository is the largest and most viewed/accessed educational repository in the world. It has been visited by 11.4 crore (11 million) viewers in the YouTube alone. They are available for use and free downloads by anyone from the NPTEL website. The videos cover more than 20 science and engineering branches and also extend to management, humanities and social sciences. The videos are being supplemented by text, quizzes and assignments. The web courses are complete courses with text, quizzes and animations.
3. How will NPTEL help the community?
Course contents are useful for teacher training and help improve the quality of students. In addition, course materials (both web and video) are freely accessible by everyone independent of their geographic location. These courses are currently used by professionals and industry also for updating their academic background. Open and distance education using NPTEL contents are long term prospects for IITs. The contents will help evolve criteria for focused learning and a common set of standards for arts, science and professional education in India through participation by everyone concerned with teaching and learning.

4. About the Institute:
VPCOE has student centered institutional development as a motto and committed to pursue academic excellence to develop a student with comprehensive technical knowledge and integrated personality.

VPCOE has been certified for ISO 9001:2000 .The institute has excellent infrastructure, friendly clean environment, well equipped modern Labs, and dedicated staff.

VPCOE is a Remote Center of IIT Bombay and IIT Khargpur under the National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Govt. of India), through which more than twenty workshop and five CEP’s were organized during last academic year. Around 2000 students and faculty members of VPCOE & Surrounding institutes were benefited from these workshops. VPCOE is also recognized for the project Quality Enhancement in Engineering Education (QEEE) by IIT Madras and MHRD Govt. of India.

The Vidya Pratishthan’s of Engineering has initiated the mission for education in collaboration with NPTEL and is focused to provide high quality technical education in its region and also lead the academic activity in the community around. Set in a rural environment in the state of Maharashtra, the college offers state-of-the-art facilities for engineering and technology education,

The VPCOE has organized many seminars, conferences and workshops to promote the scientific and technical research among the academic community. The present workshop organised by the VPCOE is essential to bring together, the faculty members of different technical institutions in this region for evolving strategies and implement effective utilisation of NPTEL resources. The college hopes that such activities will enable it to become a nodal centre for high quality technical education in the region and, in the long run, establish itself as a premier institution worldwide.
